Bridging the divide

Lesson 6

Part 1 - Managing stress and emotions

6: Manufacturing more useful feelings

Course Complete

Replace unhelpful emotions with different, incompatible, more useful ones.

Key takeaways:

Labeling your experience (as "angry" or "sad", for example) may be useful, but may not be necessary.
Identify the not-so-useful actions you do in your body, and what you could do instead that is different, incompatible, and more useful.
Manufacture different feelings: Instead of getting caught up in analysis or stories, focus on changing your musculoskeletal mechanics.
Be your own scientist: Experiment, find what works for you, and leave the rest.

Practice suggestion:

Whenever you experience a contracted feeling - for example, anger:

Acknowledge: I am doing anger.
Then investigate: How am I doing anger? How is my posture, breathing, attention, and movement?
Replace at least one not-so-useful action you are doing in your body with a different, incompatible action that is more useful.
