Focus on keeping the channels of communication open and on cultivating a positive relationship.

Key takeaways:

To increase your chances that someone willingly and productively engages in a conversation with you, focus on (1) making it safe enough for them to talk with you, (2) making it motivating so they want to talk with you, and (3) making it easy so they are able to talk with you.
Shift your attention to these two long-term, big-picture goals: keeping the channels of communication open and cultivating a positive relationship.
This approach is generally less stressful for everyone involved, which makes it more likely that you achieve your goals.

Practice suggestion:

In your daily interactions, notice whether you have an "agenda".

If you have an agenda, how do you do that in your body - your posture, breathing, muscle tone, awareness, and movement?
Play with replacing your agenda with "let's just hang out".  What changes?
